I very much like the idea of giving the parents "homework" and having them write about their own child, or maybe a short video or tape recording about what their family or culture is like. I also like the idea of each month having a couple of students talking about their culture to the rest of the class, teaching their peers about different ways of life.
It is also important to ask the students open ended questions or to summerize what you have said (and vice versa) to make sure that they understand. In Weinstein/Migano it is suggested to keep the pace of the conversation and allow the students to talk (most classrooms the teacher talks 2/3 of the time). The chapter also mentions to have equal participation amoung the students too, not just call on the students that raise their hands but encourage all students to speak.

in my child development lab. the head teacher tries to visit the home of each child or at least meet with the parents once. these normally before the class starts in the fall or during the first month. this is a great opportunity to really see what is going on in the childs life and helps the parents to feel important and included as well. I think this should be the first option that teachers go for. If that is not possible then I think the homework paper is the second best thing. it is one thing to hear about the home life of a child and it is another thing to see it first hand.
